Position- Assistant Lab Manager

Veterans Curation Program (VCP) – Assistant Lab Manager – VCP Laboratory, Augusta, GA

Reports to: Project Manager, Assistant Project Manager, and Lab Managers
Directly Supervises: VCP Veteran Laboratory Technicians
Status: Full-Time

Job Summary

The VCP is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) funded program that hires military veterans to process USACE collections. Over the course of five months, each technician is trained to process artifacts and documentation associated with USACE collections and receives individualized professional growth and development support. The VCP Assistant Lab Manager works closely with other management staff and provides support on administration, collection management, outreach and engagement, and personnel management within the VCP lab.

Essential Functions:
• Oversee daily processing of federally-owned archives and artifact collections
• Support Lab Managers in training technicians to process collections and conduct database entry
• Assist Lab Managers with daily administrative duties, including bi-weekly report writing
• Draft and edit finding aids and collection management reports
• Perform quality control on archival databases, artifact catalogs, reports, photographs, and scans
• Actively provide professional advice and guidance to technicians, including resume building
• Generate content for program social media platforms
• Represent the program to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers personnel, military representatives, veteran service organizations, and community members

Core Competencies:
• Administration: Be able to learn and implement program mission, work and communicate effectively with lab staff, meet reporting deadlines, and conduct time-keeping responsibilities for technicians
• Collection Management: Assist Lab Managers in collection processing planning, quality control and review, database management, digital imaging, and artifact/document identification
• Outreach/Engagement: Be able to clearly and simply describe the VCP and its mission to the public, engage with community partners, create on-brand social media content, and conduct outreach
• Personnel Management: Assist in the hiring and supervision of technicians and provide them with professional growth and development support

Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, Archival/Information Studies, Museum Studies, Historic Preservation or closely related field
• Experience with public archaeology outreach and education
• Excellent understanding of material culture, archaeological field methods, and/or documentation
• A passion for helping others and working in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications
• Graduate degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, Archival/Information Studies, Museum Studies, Historic Preservation or closely related field
• Field school or cultural resource management experience

Compensation and Benefits
• Hourly wage - $27.50
• Federal holidays; 15 Days paid leave; Paid Health/Dental/Life Insurance; 401k (after one year)
