Lecturer Job Announcement Department of Anthropology
The Department of Anthropology at Georgia State University (GSU) seeks applications for a Lecturer position with a focus in archaeological anthropology. GSU is a Tier-1 research institution located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, a thriving, dynamic, and multicultural urban setting. GSU enrolls and graduates one of the most diverse student bodies in the country and has received national recognition for its innovative approaches to ensuring student success. The department is committed to serving this student body and advancing innovative research by building a diverse faculty. The Department of Anthropology is home to 12 collegial, full-time faculty who represent all of the subfields of anthropology, has engaged and passionate undergraduate majors, and has a thriving master’s program. The department also has a recently renovated, state of the art Archaeology Lab that may be used for instruction and which houses the MARTA archaeological collection, a large collection of historical materials associated with the growth of Atlanta.
The successful candidate should have a PhD in Anthropology at the time of appointment, a proven record of excellence in teaching, and the ability to mentor and engage GSU’s diverse student body. The Lecturer will teach four classes each semester, and at least two of those each semester will be ANTH 1102, a four-field introductory course. In addition to the introductory courses, the Lecturer will have the ability to teach and develop upper-division and graduate level courses in one’s areas of expertise. The ideal candidate will have an active research agenda in the Americas, with a preferred focus in Southeastern archaeology and/or historical and urban archaeology. Preference will be given to candidates with active fieldwork that will involve students, especially in the format of field schools. The ability to teach a course on the essentials of Cultural Resource Management (CRM) archaeology, ideally based on one’s professional experience in CRM, is also a preferred quality as it will contribute to the “College to Career” initiative at GSU. Methodological focus is open, but preference is given to candidates with expertise in Geophysics, GIS and Geospatial Statistics, Lithic Analysis, Paleoethnobotany, or Zooarchaeology.
In the University System of Georgia, Lecturer positions are indefinitely renewable and have the opportunity for promotion to Senior Lecturer and Principal Senior Lecturer. Lecturers are full voting members of the department and have opportunities for service in the department and at the College of Arts & Sciences and University levels. Starting salary is expected to be $50,000 with the possibility of additional pay for summer teaching.
