The Florida Museum of Natural History (FLMNH) is hiring a Collections Manager II for the Division of Anthropology. This full-time (1.0 FTE) position will serve as Collections Manager for the Ceramic Technology Laboratory (0.5 FTE) and Florida Archaeology (0.5 FTE) and report to the Curator of Florida Archaeology.
In consultation with Curator of Florida Archaeology and other FLMNH archaeology curators, conduct specialized analyses of pottery to enhance scientific value of specific collections. This may extend to academic service such as reviewing publications and grant proposals, and taking on roles in professional service to societies and journals focused on scientific research and collections management.
Improve and maintain to recognized professional curatorial standards the Florida Archaeology and related collections, including housing, cataloguing, database development, and facilitating accessibility. Activities can include participation in conferences and workshops dedicated to archaeology, anthropology, and/or natural history collections, as well as seeking funds to support improvements and use of the Florida Archaeology and related collections.
Work with Curator and other collections manager to devise and periodically update a coordinated, long-term strategic plan for maintenance and improvement of Florida Archaeology collections and related collections from the greater southeastern U.S.
Maintain regular hours for serving professional and general-public audiences on Florida archaeology collections issues, such as identification of artifacts, assisting visiting scholars, image research, and processing loans.
Coordinate and manage OE and OPS budgets for current contracts, grants, state funds, and foundation funds. Inventory equipment and supplies associated with Florida Archaeology and Ceramic Technology Laboratory and purchase supplies and equipment as needed.
Interview and evaluate OPS applicants, supervise and train OPS, WS and other employees, students, and volunteers working in Florida Archaeology and Ceramic Technology Laboratory.
Outreach Activities: Participate in public education programs and exhibit planning within and outside the FLMNH. Coordinate tours and press visits within the Florida Archaeology collection; prepare appropriate educational outreach devices (i.e., website, educational programs, and displays). Respond to requests for identifications and information from researchers and the general public. Lecture in classes (graduate or undergraduate) through an affiliated department (e.g., Anthropology) as desired and as time permits.
Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's degree in a related field and five years of experience working with a collection of an appropriate discipline. Specific knowledge of the discipline for the collection area is required.
Preferred Qualifications: Master of Arts or Master of Science in anthropology, archaeology or related discipline preferred, with at least five years of experience in archaeological fieldwork and five years of experience in archaeological collections curation or Ph.D. in anthropology or archaeology.
Advanced skills in the analysis of archaeological pottery, such as technological analysis, petrographic analysis, residue analysis or chemical characterization (e.g., NAA, ICP-MS).
Demonstrated ability for effective scholarly writing, research, and communication with peers, students, and the general public.
Ability to successfully secure grants for collections management and/or use.
Ability to mentor graduate and undergraduate students and volunteers.
Advanced knowledge of archaeological pottery from Florida and the southeastern U.S.
Basic understanding of Florida and greater southeastern U.S. ceramic, bone, stone, wood, shell, and metal artifacts and awareness of special housing, storage, and security requirements for each kind of material.
Basic knowledge of human skeletal remains.
