- Circumstances of the Award -
The 2004 Southeastern Archaeological Conference Book Prize will be awarded to the author of the outstanding paper submitted by a student concerning the prehistory, ethnohistory, or historical archaeology of the southeastern U.S.
- Who May Apply? -
Any person currently enrolled in an academic degree-granting program may submit a paper to the competition. Only papers having one author are eligible. The paper must be on the program of the 2004 SEAC/MAC meeting in St Louis. Presenting a paper at the meeting requires membership in either SEAC or MAC; this year the paper competition is open to student members of either organization.
- About the Competition -
The purpose of the competition and award is to foster student participation in the program of the annual meetings of the SEAC. The Book Prize shall consist of display copies of new and recent titles in Southeastern Archaeology and related topics contributed by the vendors in the book salesroom of the annual meeting. To enter the competition, papers must be submitted in advance of the meeting to a committee appointed by the Executive Board of the Southeastern Archaeological Conference (see How to Apply, below). It is also the responsibility of the submitter to send to the Program Chairperson of the annual meeting an abstract and the necessary registration forms at the proper time. To be eligible for the Competition your paper must be part of the program at the conference.
- How to Apply -
In addition to submitting your abstract and registration forms to the Program Chairperson (see above), you must submit four double-spaced copies of the paper to the Chair of the Student Paper Competition Committee by September 10, 2004. The paper reviewed for the competition must have the same content as that actually presented at the annual meeting (see http://www.clas.ufl.edu/users/waggoner/papers.html for tips and guidelines on presenting papers at meetings, including suggested length of the text). A covering letter should accompany the entry, containing a representation of the submitter's current status in a degree program. Only one paper submitted per applicant may be considered for the award. - The Award -
The winner of the Competition and Book Prize will be announced at the Annual Business Meeting of the Southeastern Archaeological Conference in St Louis. The winner will receive the Book Prize the following day. The Committee reserves the prerogative to defer the competition and award in the event of a shortage of entries.
